Why I am running

(Text of video)

Hi, I’m Walter Hofheinz.  I’m running for U.S. Representative for the 32nd Congressional District of Texas.

Why am I running?  I believe effective, responsible government can be part of the solution, not the problem. It’s my offer to work on a broader scope to leave the world a better place for those who come after me, with more opportunity, a better, more secure quality of life, and a fairer, more just society.

There are those, including my Republican opponent, who fundamentally believe that government is the problem – they say that government should just get out of the way – and then you’re on your own and the market should decide.

As a native Texan, I find the thought of rugged individualism and making it on your own attractive.

The only problem is that it is simply not possible.  We’re all in this together.

The reason our ancestors weren’t eaten by lions is that they worked together.  In frontier days, when a neighbor needed a barn, the community came together to build it.  We still see this spirit of volunteerism and cooperation alive today.

Some tasks, however, are simply too complex or large scale to accomplish on an individual or volunteer basis, posing challenges we can’t meet on our own.

We act together through our government to meet these complex challenges.

Every two years, we choose once again: what will be the focus of the work we do together as a society?

Will we allow those that have power and wealth to use government to continue to get more? Or will we use government to work together to create more opportunity, a better, more secure quality of life, and a fairer and more just society for all of us?

Over the past 30 years, we have taken a wrong turn, along a path that is increasingly destructive, that increasingly says “You’re on your own.” I choose to work for a different path.

It is time to stop and set out for the right path, a path of principled use of government for the public good rather than the good of the few. Success depends on your taking action along with me. This is not my campaign, it is our campaign.  Without your work as well as mine, things will simply continue on the destructive, short-sighted path we are on now.

I’m Walter Hofheinz.  I’m running for the 32nd Congressional District of Texas.

I ask that you join me in working to create more opportunity, a better, more secure quality of life, and a fairer and more just society for us and those who come after us.
